Something Unnatural about Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation

Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation

Natural, as in a natural predator.

I recently added Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation to my list. The publishing operation, which publishes 36 journals, appears to be owned by Prof. Mahmoud Abdel-Aty, who claims associations with Sohag University in Egypt and with the University of Bahrain.

There are a lot of strange things about this publisher, strange in the sense of non-standard.

The publisher used to be based at Western Michigan University. It was somehow transferred to Dr. Abdel-Aty. The outfit’s flagship journal, Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences, has as its managing editor Dr. A.R. McGurn, from WMU. I emailed him and asked about the history of Natural Sciences Publishing but received no reply.

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences was first published at Western Michigan University, and then for a while (2007-2011?) it was published by Dixie W. Publishing Corporation in Montgomery, Alabama and since 2011 has been published in the Middle East along with the 35 other journals the current publisher has added to its fleet.

I am unable to find information about the transfer of this journal from one publisher to another and find the changes mysterious. The journal has an impact factor, or at least it says it does. Thomson Reuters’ Journal Citation Reports does indeed list a current impact factor for a journal called Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences and published by Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation, but the listing there carries a Kalamazoo, Michigan address, not the Bahraini one.

The publisher’s fleet includes both open access and toll-access journals. They publish two pairs of journals that are almost identical:

  • Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
  • Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences Letters
  • Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
  • Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability Letters

I don’t understand why a publisher would publish two such closely-related journals.

Next, the publisher includes in its fleet two journals published by other publishers. They are:

The publisher has prominent links to Facebook, Twitter, etc. on almost all of its pages, but the links don’t work.

Finally, some of the journals claim a homemade “impact factor” calculated from Google Scholar. Here’s one example:  “As of Dec., 2012 based on the statistics from Google Scholar, the Impact Factor of IJTFST is 0.125.” This is deceptive. You either have an impact factor or you don’t. Falsely stating an impact factor tricks potential authors into submitting papers they otherwise might not submit.

I recommend not publishing in any of the journals owned by Natural Sciences Publishing Company.

The first journal in each pair is probably for full-length articles, while the “Letters” one is for shorter texts (possibly comments). In my field (economics), there are (for example) two similarly related (quite reputable) journals “Applied Economics” and “Applied Economics Letters” published by Taylor & Francis.

    • Thank you! Very helpful comment.

      • Dear Beall,

I am the Editor in Chief of Malaysian Journal of Science (MJS).

I’m reluctant to believe that MJS is listed in your list stating that it has been published by Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation Journals.

MJS was established in 1972 by Faculty of Science, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since, we have been publishing under our own University of Malaya Press. Beginning 1st of January 2014, MJS will be published under Springer. For further information on MJS, please see the link below.

We strongly disagree the listing of our Malaysian Journal of Science and we are not anyway related to the publisher as mention above.

        Thank you.

        Prof Dr Agamuthu P.

      • Dear Dr. Agamuthu P.:

The Malaysian Journal of Science is not included on my list. Why is your journal included in the portfolio of Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation (which is indeed on my list)?

It seems to me that you should take action with the publisher that has added your journal to its portfolio of journals if you are unhappy with it being included there.

What is your journal’s relationship with Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation? Did you agree to let them include your journal on their website?

        Thank you,

        Jeffrey Beall

      • Why not Prof Dr Agamuthu P. can includes his journal in the portfolio of Natural Sciences Publishing Corporation?
        I don’t understand….

  2. Laufeyn says:

    Just to add examples…
The “letters” approach is also used by the “Tetrahedron family” of chemistry journals: Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry (IF 2.903) and Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters (IF 2.338) where the latter is for “preliminary experimental or theoretical research results of outstanding significance and timeliness” and Tetrahedron (IF 2.803) and Tetrahedron Letters (IF 2.397) covering organic chemistry in a similar way as the previous examples (the family also include Tetrahedron Asymetry (IF 2.115) for rapid publication of asymmetric chemisry). It is also applied by the Phytochemical Society of Europe+Phytochemical Society of North America in their Phytochemistry (IF 3.050) and Phytochemistry Letters (IF 1.179) where the latter supposedly is a quicker publication accepting smaller work such as single compound descriptions . All these are currently published through Elsevier.

one cannot compare Elesevier and other open access publisher..

  4. Omar says:

I am astonished how people can be fooled by such publisher..What is Sohag Journal of Mathematics!!! What I know, Sohag is just a small city with only one University and couple of schools in it. If all the citizens gather they might write a paper for this journal.

  5. Prof. Rafeey says:

I can not understand why you wrote this post —- It is not an open access publisher !!!!!

  6. Prof. Rafeey says:

As far as I know, they did not publish any open access journal, please see this link

  7. Dr M Sakthivel says:

    Dear Beall,

There is a confusion between the two websites for a journal “PENSEE”. I understand that the website http://www.penseejournal.com/ is active and publish articles in a weeks time without any review process. They charge around US$450 per article. Most importantly this PENSEE publishes in French, but articles in http://www.penseejournal.com/ are published in English. Would you help me to find the original “PENSEE” which is indexed in Journal Citation Report 2013.

  8. The publisher information for Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences has been updated in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and the Master Journal List to reflect the current Bahraini address.

  9. Muhammad Altaf Khan says:

applied mathematics and information sciences and applied mathematics and information sciences letters they are two different journals. the name is changed and there is no imbeguity. such journals like springer have many journals like elesevier. so every one sholud submit the paper to that journals they are good journals. The person who doing this roumers is a fake person

  10. Saul Pomares says:

    Dear Jeffrey Beall,

Now that the publisher information for Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences was corrected in the JCR and MJL, Is this journal out of your black list? I don’t care about all the other journals published by NSP. I think you don’t must disqualify this journal since it belongs to the JCR. Or your judment is over JCR and other indexes like SJR of Scopus?

  11. :

In his CV, Prof. McGurn includes this:
“I am Managing Editor of the journal Applied Mathematics and Information Sciences and on the Editorial Boards of
ISRN Condensed Matter Physics and Quantum Physics Letters.”
