Open-Access Publisher McMed International Helps Authors Needing a Fast Publication

McMed International

Fast publication

I recently learned of the new open-access publisher McMed International. Everything about this publisher is amateurish and even childish. Its website feels like it was designed for children, and no serious researcher should publish here.

McMed launched with 79 journals, many of which gratuitously use geographical terms in their titles. Though based in Chennai, India, McMed publishes journals with titles containing geographical terms such as “American,” “European,” and “Scandinavian.” They even publish the Singapore Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, despite lacking any honest connection to the country.

McMed International

Another “whopper” from McMed International

The publisher’s URL is http://mcmed.us/, yet it has no honest connection with the United States. McMed also publishes the pseudo-science journal International Journal of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy Research.

As shown in the image above, the journals launched without ISSNs.

I learned about the publisher because someone forwarded me a copy of a spam email soliciting articles for the McMed publication International Journal of Advances in Case Reports. This is seriously one of the dumbest journal titles I have ever heard of, and I have heard of many. The spam email said,

You will be very happy, I promise, to publish your next scientific work (Original Research/Review Articles/Case Studies) with INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ADVANCES IN CASE REPORTS and we humbly request your patronage.

We are glad to provide you the insight of our truly global and multi-specialty team of editors and peer-reviewers. Our dedicated proofreaders, cheerfully labor on your Manuscripts in a speedy way, with high quality standards on the back of their minds and offer you very appropriate content improvisation wherever required.

Finally, the spam email promises, “Review Process will complete within 1 days after submission.” I was surprised to observe that the journals contain a fair number of published articles. Who in their right mind would submit here?

Can scholarly publishing get any worse than this?

Scholarly communication is being threatened on many fronts. Publishers like McMed International are a large component of this threat.

  1. Bishnu says:

Possibly, they want to attract authors by putting US or American in their titles !!

  2. JJH says:

I can’t imagine someone submitting their article there; it must depend on fooling foreign researchers who wish to publish in an “American” journal. As Jeffrey mentions, the website seems rather childish; it reminds me of a teenager’s old cluttered Myspace page from the early 2000s.

Our dedicated proofreaders, cheerfully labor on your Manuscripts in a speedy way, with high quality standards on the back of their minds and offer you very appropriate content improvisation wherever required.

If I am reading “very appropriate content improvisation” correctly, the guy behind the journals is promising not only to clear up the contributors’ prose into something resembling standard Inglish, but also to write the prose himself if they can’t think of anything to write.

The promise to perform “peer-review” is cursory and pro forma, tacked onto the end of the paragraph extolling the brilliance of the proofreaders and where in their minds they keep their quality standards.

So the market targetted here comprises non-English-speaking academics who need to have an English-language article on a website somewhere that they can point to for career advancement, and are not concerned about its content, or about writing it themselves.

  5. herr doktor bimler says:

When someone uses the construction “McX” or “MacX”, I understand it as shorthand to describe a cheapened, degraded, mass-produced, fast-food travesty of “X”. Does it have some different connotation in the Indian subcontinent?

  6. Their “Publication Ethics” page (http://mcmed.us/publicationethics) appears to be lifted directly from the Taylor & Francis “Publishing Ethics” guidelines (http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/ethics.asp).

Many of the journals have the same or similar editorial boards despite being completely different in topic. e.g. “R. Shrivastava” is editor of “American Journal of Engineering Science and Research” “International Journal of Business Intelligence” and “International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology”!

    • Reinhard says:

This is the affiliation of the editor in chief R. Shrivastava:
      http://www.vitrobio.com/index.php/contact
also this company is found under the same address:
      http://www.laboratoire-naturveda.fr/

I imagine that the mooks running this con have a single editorial-board template which they paste into each of the “Pharma Intellligence” and McMed ‘journals’, and that the names on the template have simply been scraped off the net. It’s not as if they actually have an editorial board carefully reading each submission and choosing peer reviewers.

It doesn’t seem plausible to me that a Dr Selvakumar Dakshnamurthy of Wayne State University (for instance) would seriously be involved in this scam. He certainly doesn’t mention it on his Researchgate entry. More likely the grifters found his name, thought it conveyed a subcontinental affiliation to their intended targets, and grabbed it. Same with all the others.

  7. Jill M says:

Thank you, Jeffry, for publishing the list of journal titles for this publisher. I am particularly concerned about #20 and #25. They are very close to legitimate journal titles. I know that is what these people count on, but these are two more to add to my suspect list if they come up in a search.

    • herr doktor bimler says:

What language is “Der Pharmacologia Sinica” supposed to be? Did they think “Oh, a Latin name for our journal does not look sufficiently long-established, let’s tack on the definite article from German”?

  8. Ravindra Arya says:

Out of interest I looked at the editorial board of 2 of their journals: “International Journal of Neuro & Psychological Disorders” and “International Journal of Advanced Paediatrics”. The editorial boards for these 2 journals are identical. None of the associate editors has a primary academic expertise in either pediatrics or neurology. The “Editor in Chief” is a post-doctoral fellow.

They’re a branch of Pharma Intelligence (already on your list).
