A True Predator: Austin Publishing Group

Austin Publishing Group

Avoid at all cost.

I am writing this blog post to warn all scholarly authors and researchers to avoid Austin Publishing Group. It is a sneaky and exploitative, second-generation predatory publisher. It will quickly accept your submission and then send you multiple invoices, pressuring you to pay.

Austin Publishing Group claims it’s based in New Jersey, but I think they just use a relative’s address and are really based in India.

We are now seeing a second wave or second generation of predatory publishers, and Austin is one of them. Many of the employees of the original predatory publishers, such as OMICS Group, have left their former employers and formed predatory operations of their own.

The startup costs are low, so there’s almost no barrier to launching an open-access publishing operation. Unfortunately, this second generation learned the business from extremely exploitative and dishonest publishers.

Austin Journal of Women's Health

Don’t be fooled.

Austin Publishing Group’s strategy of using graphic medical images to make itself look legitimate has been, unfortunately, very successful. Just because an open-access publisher displays such pictures does not mean it is legitimate. Unfortunately, many smart people have been fooled.

Austin is a prolific spammer. Their spam emails often end with this surreal statement:

This is not a spam email, if you do not wish to receive any email from us, please reply us with unsubscribe on the subject line.

Austin spams using fake names, then it accepts pretty much anything submitted, even if the author is only making an inquiry about a manuscript’s appropriateness for a journal. Here’s a report I received documenting Austin’s practice:

Hello thanks for the information on the list of predatory publishers But now I have a problem because I didn’t know this list and I have submitted an article to Austin publishing group. I would stress that this publishing group contacted me by mail and they didn’t tell about APC (author process charging) and I have checked in their official site and I have no found any notices or information or advertisement to APC or any money to pay I would stress that all the process of submission was lead only by mail and no registration or loging was made So now after acceptance and publication they request a payment of 1820$ Obviously if I was known that there was an APC or some money to pay I wouldn’t accept the possibility to submission to this journal Now I would kindly request your help and support ; could you suggest me what I have to do?

The invoice emails that Austin sends out look like this (with the victim’s identifying information removed):

  5. Anne says:

Sue. If there was no agreement on costs, there’s no contract.
Lawyers will be delighted. “Publishers” like these get hurt when it comes to money. And my guess is it will be no problem to state court in the USA, following US law, and not India.

  6. MC says:

“We understand that you are the busiest person in the world,”

hahah, and some people wonder why we all think these “publishers” are really based in India and China

  9. chrisstronks says:

I responded to a request to join the editorial board of Austin Publishing Group – Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. Thanks to this great website and personal suspicions I requested to remove me from the “board” of editors. from their referee pool and from their mailing list, which they did. They indeed have a convincing website and the editorial board contained (and still does contain) quite a few scientists from respected universities, including Johns Hopkins. Anyway, slowly it downed on me that each and every email started with “Greetings for the day!” and that more targeted emails contained spelling and grammatical issue that a ‘real American’ native speaker would never make. Many of the emails were signed with “Davis Cordle”, but (s)he is definitely not American. His/her emails were sent from Austin, Texas (as if) but I seriously doubt it. I reviewed one article that actually looked pretty good. However, there is no formal login page, I did not receive a user name or password and the referee report form was a clumsy word document. They also pressingly asked the ‘editors’ time and again to submit their own work.

Long story short – this is a very, very elegantly covered up predatory journal, with a flashy website, rather correct language use in emails, and they even sent stuff off for review(!). But the lack of login opportunities, slight grammatical errors in emails showing they are using fake American names, clumsy referee report forms and so on does indeed strongly suggest a predatory journal indeed.

Thank you Jeffrey for your great work here.

    Chris

A great list of more predatory journals from a Colorado academic librarian

    • That’s me! Thanks.

      • Janice Flahiff says:

Oh, sorry I forgot to mention you by name! Every once in a while I get an email “offer” to contribute to or edit a journal. Sure enough, they are always in your list! So I just respond with a link to your site.
My colleagues here in Toledo, OH have independently found your site.

      • MC says:

        Now I’m just confused

  11. John Mashey says:

Well, predatories have used up “International”, “American”, “British” Journal names, so now they are down to cities.
I wonder why they picked on Austin.

    • herr doktor bimler says:

      “Global” is still popular.

    • MC says:

Why do you supposed they skipped “county”, “province” and “municipality”. I think the “Municipal Journal of Animal Scientific Gerontology” could have an excellent fake impact factor. I’ll start with 2.114. Not too high to be doubted, not too low to be ignored (don’t want to be below 1), and far too many decimal points which indicates precision.

  12. herr doktor bimler says:

Your correspondent Naka performed an in-depth inquiry into the scoundrels and gobshites of Austin (and their associated scams), last year:
    https://scholarlyoa.com/2014/12/18/the-omics-publishing-groups-empire-is-expanding/#comment-321581

  13. herr doktor bimler says:

Some of the Nigerian predatory publishers are basically phishing sites — operating on the principle that some people will use the same password to set up their accounts at a journal as they use for their bank accounts — and the APCs are just a bonus.

So the weasels behind Austin may be skeezy little graspers, but they have competitors who are *even more predatory*.

  14. dr.nrkhan says:

Thanks brother for the courtesy and good advice. I have been through the same thing some time back. Best Regards Dr Nauman

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

  15. Mr. Bob says:

Hi dear i need to ask you about global journal of animal scientific research. you put it in your predatory lists but when you see it it is not agree with the reasons you put to be predatory so could you please tel me more about the journal.

  16. MC says:

Jeff – unfortunately, I discovered that this journal (on your list) is indexed in CAS and thus appears in scifinder results.

    http://www.joac.info/Default.aspx

Usually the ACS is better than this.

    • I think ACS has made a mistake. On this page, the journal negligently lists all of the fake impact factors it has “earned,” i.e., paid for.

      • MC says:

I sent a request through scifinder to have it looked into, and checked the box to have someone “contact me” about my inquiry, so hopefully they get back to me and they terminate that journal’s spot in the index, with extreme prejudice

      • MC says:

        Got a generic reply.

  17. Greg says:

Jeffrey, take a look at: http://www.e-acadjournal.org/ Eastern Academic Journal.

Google maps shows that it is located in a hotel.

Beside this: I can find some troubling things about http://www.scientific-publications.net , but can you give a better idea why is it in your list?

    • Thanks for alerting me to this new journal.

Regarding the publisher International Scientific Publications (the one you link to), I observed some problems with spam, fast-track peer review, and, rather seriously, plagiarism.

    • herr doktor bimler says:

      Eastern Academic Journal.

Owned by one Milen Todorov, computational chemist, a research associate at a Bulgarian university. Looks like he has had to publish with predatory publishers in the past — including the International Scientific Publications you mentioned — so he’s decided to go into the business himself and grab a slice of the pie.
I like the special selling point of his journal(s), the New Publishing Model where you get to choose your own reviewer.

  18. How are you Dr Jeffrey Beall :
May you tell me about the Journal of Natural Sciences Research
they claim having 5.58 Impact factor

    • This journal is published by this publisher: International Institute for Science, Technology and Education (IISTE) (International Knowledge Sharing Platform)

The publisher is included on my list. As you found, they are dishonest and falsely claim to have an impact factor. I recommend against submitting papers to all this publisher’s journals.

  19. Dear
please tell me about Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology
    https://www.editorialmanager.com/abab/default.aspx

if its predatory journal or not]and also is this have real impact factor

  20. Seye says:

Dear Dr Beall, do you have any information on a journal named “Clinics in Oncology” and is affiliated to ‘Palliative Care’? I got an invitation to serve on its editorial board. Many thanks

  21. Sam says:

    Dear Dr. Beall,

Do you have any information about http://thescientificpages.org/page/engineering-science/scientific-pages-of-metallurgical-and-material-engineering.php This publication or publisher itself. I did not find it on your website. I have received an email to serve on an editorial/review board. Hope to hear from you about this.

  24. Hana says:

    Hi,

A friend of mine applied an article to Austin publishing group. They accepted the article immediately and published it. Now they are asking her to pay a fee of 1500 Dollars. What can she do? can she not pay?

    Hana
    Saudi Arabia

    • That depends on the (online) forms she has signed I guess.

    • She should ask them to withdraw the paper, but because they are unethical, they will probably refuse to do this or ask for a fee. I don’t know of this company going after a researcher who refuses to pay. This horrible publisher is based in India. There is nothing they can do to a researcher in KSA.

    • Seit says:

Dr. Hana, do not pay to them as they look like real scammers using pay pal accounts to avoid being noticed by IRS and State Government. Someone should complain to US IRS and New York state.

    • Dr.Ina says:

It is better to avoid making any payment. Please check with your university lawyer.

  25. Naresh says:

Dr. Hana, do not pay to the Austin Publishing Group. They are cheaters. They show as if based in USA but they are in India. They require you to pay by Pay Pal and money goes to their accounts in India. Thus, they skip the taxation in USA. They are doing illegal operation and tax evasion.

  26. Na Breeze says:

    IMPORTANT:
Here is extensive detail on AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP AND SM GROUP. More information is in the comments section of following blog of Dr. Beall with schematics of their operations.

    https://scholarlyoa.com/2014/12/18/the-omics-publishing-groups-empire-is-expanding/

DECEPTIVE OPERATIONS OF AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP & SM GROUP:

It is not clear whether Austin Publishing Group is a part of OMICS. But evidences indicate that three people based in India are behind the operations of following two publications:
    1. AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP
    Journals: http://austinpublishinggroup.com/
    eBooks: http://austinpublishinggroup.com/ebooks/
    2. SM GROUP
    http://www.esciencemedicine.com/
    Journals: http://smjournals.com/
    eBooks: http://www.smgebooks.com/

    I. AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP & SM GROUP OWNERS and COMPANIES ARE LOCATED IN INDIA NOT IN USA:

Both of these publications seem to be controlled by two for-profit companies formed and owned by MAHENDRA REDDY CHIRRA, SIVA PARVATHI CHIRRA & ARI PADMAJA.

The names and locations of Indian companies are as following:
    1. AUSTIN PUBLISHERS PRIVATE LIMITED (Operates AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP Journals & eBooks)
OWNERS: MAHENDRA REDDY CHIRRA & SIVA PARVATHI CHIRRA
ADDRESS: Plot No. 828, Sai Sree Addhya VR Colony, Kukatpally, Hyderabad – 500072, India

    2. SM MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES PRIVATE LIMITED (Operates SM GROUP Journals & eBooks)
OWNERS: MAHENDRA REDDY CHIRRA & ARI PADMAJA.
ADDRESS: Plot No. 828, Sai Sree Addhya VR Colony, Kukatpally, Hyderabad – 500072, India

These two companies have same address and common owners in India. It seems that the above three persons have deliberately formed two separate companies as a strategy to make maximum profits as quickly as possible.

The above two companies operate from the same address in India: Plot No. 828, Sai Sree Addhya VR Colony, Kukatpally, Hyderabad – 500072, India. This indicates that they work from a single office in India. The addresses on their website seem fake addresses.

III. 100% MATCH IN AUSTIN GROUP’S & SM GROUP’S EBOOK WEBSITES AND CONTENT:

The content and design of the Austin Publishing Group and SM Group eBook websites match 100%, confirming that both are operated by same group of people. Not only the webpages match, but also the “Author Guidelines” pdf files are same (except the name of the publisher). It substantiate that the same three people are behind these two publishers. Please see the similarities below:

    1. Home Page
    AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP: http://austinpublishinggroup.com/ebooks/
    SM GROUP: http://www.smgebooks.com/

    2. About Page
    AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP: http://austinpublishinggroup.com/ebooks/about.php
    SM GROUP: http://www.smgebooks.com/about.php

    3. Author Guidelines Page

Complete guidelines can be downloaded from their website:

IV. DECEPTIVE USA ADDRESSES ON AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP & SM GROUP WEBSITES:

Austin Publishing Group uses two addresses on its website. Google map shows first address as a remote area with no buildings. Second one is an Xchange apartment building. Both addresses have been used to deceive the authors.

    1. # 46 Casselberry Way, Monroe Township, NEW JERSEY 08831, USA
    Tel: +1-201-655-7075 Fax: +1-201-603-6413
    2. 3126 Riverside Station Blvd, Secaucus, New Jersey 07094, USA

    Source: http://austinpublishinggroup.com/cancer-clinical-research/contact.php

The address on SM Group Website:
SM Online Publishers LLC, 300 E Royal LN, Suite 127, Irving, TX 75039, USA
    Tel: +1-469-647-3601

SM Group uses same building address, where multiple other businesses are located. It seems SM Group does not exist there and they are either using someone else’s address or using a virtual address.

    V. FORMATION OF COMPANIES IN TEXAS AND DELAWARE BY SAME PEOPLE WHO OWN THESE PUBLISHING COMPANIES IN INDIA:

MAHENDRA REDDY CHIRRA & ARI PADMAJA formed SM ONLINE PUBLISHERS LLC in Texas in late 2014. It seems this Texas Company was incorporated as shell company to conceal the original location and operations, which is in India. Similarly, they have formed AUSTIN PUBLISHERS LLC in Delaware. These two US companies were incorporated after the formation of Indian companies.

    VI. FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS THROUGH PAYPAL:

The Austin Publishing Group website indicates that they accept payment by PayPal. It could be because they do not have any other ways (merchant account) to accept payments in USA (because they do not have a presence in USA). Thus, this might be the only way they can charge authors’ credit cards and transact payments to their personal banks in India. Thus, it looks like a serious scam.

    VII. SUMMARY:

The common ownership of the two companies (AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP and SM GROUP) and 100% similarity between their eBook websites confirm that the both companies are owned by same group of people (MAHENDRA REDDY CHIRRA, SIVA PARVATHI CHIRRA & ARI PADMAJA) and operate from India. They have been highly secretive about their original location. Cleverly, they named their predatory company as “Austin Publishing Group” to deceive the authors and make them think that they are located in Austin, Texas. Additionally, the addresses on their websites are fake and are apartment addresses in USA. The formation of the two different publishing companies by the same owners seems to be a deliberate plan to maximize their profits as quickly as possible. The Google+ page shows one of their employees (VARA PRASAD) located in Hyderabad and the owner (ARI PADMAJA) of the company is in his circle that corroborates the above facts.

It is highly recommended to NOT to submit manuscripts/books to the AUSTIN PUBLISHING GROUP and SM GROUP. Also, authors who have already published with them may give a thought on RETRACTING their manuscripts and lodging complaint against these two untrustworthy and predatory publishers.

SM ONLINE PUBLISHERS/SM GROUP terminated business in State of Texas and registered in Delaware. Reason is to hide the owneship info (Mahendra Chirra and Padmaja Ari). Delaware registration does not keep ownership info. Information is kept with Registered Agent. Also, they changed the name to SM ONLINE SCIENTIFIC RESOURCES LLC from SM ONLINE PUBLISHERS LLC. They are using registered agent’s address as their address: 160 GREENTREE DRIVE, SUITE 101, DE. Cheaters!! How can one file lawsuit against AUSTIN PUBLISHERS and SM GROUP?

Hello Everyone, does anyone know anything about Womens’ Health and Gynecology? It is under the organization “Scient Open Access”.

      http://scientonline.org/journals/womens-health-gynecology/21

I think I have been scammed. They accepted my manuscript quite quickly. It says they’re located in Canada but always emailed me at 1-3 am EST/my time. They’ve dropped off the earth at this point and I’ve been waiting to hear back from them as I have sent them my corrected galley proof a week ago.

Can someone please confirm for me of this is a scam? I noted after I submitted that there’s a publication fee of 700$
